What is charred wood

Charring is a traditional Japanese wood treatment known as shou sugi ban or yakisugi. The surface of the wood is burnt with fire and then cleaned with brushes. The softer fibres burn away and are brushed out while the harder growth rings remain, which gives the surface a deep, tactile texture.

Nordic Rafter combines this technique with modern protection: after charring and brushing, each board is primed and painted. You get the texture of charred wood in the tone you choose — not only classic black.

Charring increases the wood's resistance to the weather, brushing brings out the natural texture, and priming and painting give protection and an even coat.

Balance and Balance Light

Both charred finishes go through the same four steps — charring, brushing, priming and painting. Balance boards are brushed once, Balance Light boards twice. The Natural and Pure finishes are not charred; you will find them on the cladding and decking pages.

What is shou sugi ban or yakisugi?

It is a Japanese wood treatment in which the surface is charred and then brushed. Nordic Rafter then also primes and paints the charred boards, in the Balance and Balance Light finishes.

How much do charred wood boards cost?

Charred cladding boards start from €29.71 per m² incl. VAT, decking boards from €30.20 per m² incl. VAT, excluding delivery. The price depends on the profile, size and finish.

What is the difference between Balance and Balance Light?

Both finishes are charred, brushed, primed and painted. Balance boards are brushed once, Balance Light boards twice.

Can charred boards be used indoors?

Yes. Cladding boards in Balance and Balance Light finishes also suit interior walls and ceilings.

Are charred boards only black?

No. After charring and brushing we paint the board in the tone you choose — dark, light and natural tones are available.

Do you deliver outside Latvia?

Yes, we deliver across Europe and include delivery in the quote.
